What to Look for When Purchasing A Bus

If you are looking for a pre-owned bus, the search can become overwhelming as you navigate various sellers. There are several things to consider when selecting a bus to use for personal or business needs.

If you are unsure where to begin, here are the items you need to check:

Size

One of the two biggest factors in finding the right bus for you is the size of the vehicle. You should have a good idea how many people you plan to transport or how much space you need before you do any shopping, and make sure the vehicle will be able to hold all the passengers you need without being unnecessarily large for your purposes.

Engine Size and Reliability

Once you know how many people or how much weight you will have onboard, it is time to find the engine that will get you where you are going. American Bus Sales can help ensure that you get an engine that will stand the test of time, but it is important to check for performance, safety, and fuel economy records, as well as reviews.

Safety

Depending on what you plan to use the bus for, you may want to take extra safety precautions such as seatbelts or wheelchair lifts. Be mindful of additions that you add which can impact the bus’s overall safety, like reclining seats for example.

Electronics

If you are purchasing a used bus for sale, make sure to test all electrical equipment to guarantee everything is working right before making a purchase. It is also important to consider any modifications you want to be included.

Engine Diagnostics

Anytime you are considering purchasing a used vehicle of any kind, it is a good practice to ask for maintenance records for the vehicle and to have it inspected by an independent mechanic, so you can be aware of any potential issues that may arise. You should also be aware of if your bus takes gas or diesel fuel and how that will impact your overall costs.

School Bus Safety

In April 1939, a professor at Teachers College, Columbia University organized a conference in which established the standard color of yellow now known as National School Bus Glossy Yellow. This color was chosen because it has been scientifically proven that this particular shade of yellow is hard for other drivers to miss, thus further ensuring the safety of its passengers.

Recently, there has been an increase in school bus-related accidents. School bus drivers, passengers, and other drivers need to understand the school bus safety protocol. It is everyone’s responsibility to uphold safety rules to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.

Here are a few tips for motor vehicle operators to help ensure the safety of school buses on the road:

  • Do not pass school buses when the stop sign is visible. Many drivers ignore the school bus stop sign and believe that it may be safe to go around, it is not. This can potentially lead to a fatal accident- it is also illegal.
  • Pay attention to lights- The flashing yellow light signifies that the school bus is preparing to stop. This means you should slow down and prepare to come to a stop or navigate around the bus. The red light and extended arm mean the bus is loading/unloading. It is not safe to navigate around the bus at this point.
  • Watch out for children- After a school bus has unloaded the passengers, be mindful of where the children are as you drive away. Sometimes children do not pay attention and can potentially put themselves in danger on the road. As a driver, it is important to be vigilant.

Despite school bus-related accidents, students are 70 times more likely to get to school safely when taking a bus, as opposed to traveling by car. To ensure that students remain safe on school buses, everyone on the road needs to understand the general safety rules.

School Buses In Freezing Temperatures

School Buses In Freezing Temperatures

Schools all over the country, even some areas in the South have experienced a bit of an Arctic blast this new year. Many schools have canceled classes due to snow, ice and even extremely cold temperatures. A lot of parents depend on the bus to get their children safely to and from school each day, but the thought of little ones waiting out at cold, blustery bus stops leaves a lot of concern for parents and school administrators.

Most districts have implemented a policy of starting the buses up to an hour early each morning, to ensure they are working properly. Bus drivers are encouraged to get an earlier start to their routes and take it slow. Many school districts are asking bus drivers to wait longer at stops so that children can wait inside a house or car and come out once the bus has arrived. School districts are allowing later starts for those who are coming in on a bus and opening their doors early to those who need to be dropped off earlier.

School buses have always been a safe and effective way to transport our nation’s school children and this is no exception during the cold and dark winter months. It often takes a bit more preparation and attention to make sure buses are fueled and warmed up. Most districts often have back up buses running to help if there is a break down and mechanics on hand to fix any sudden issues.
