Bus Homes : Turning a Bus Into a Home

You’ve most likely seen school buses repurposed for private businesses or church organizations. As more groups realize how affordable and efficient buses can be, the trend has spread and now it seems just about every church building has at least one shuttle regularly waiting outside.

But, repurposing buses for this type of purpose is easy. You can usually turn any school bus into a private shuttle with just a few coats of paint. The most complicated part may be finding a member of your organization that has a permit to drive the vehicle.

There are others who think even further outside the box and convert their bus into entirely different types of vehicles. Nina Nelson is a mother who has taken an older school bus and turned it into a “skoolie”, the nickname for buses converted into an RV.

The outside of Nelson’s bus looks almost indistinguishable from your average school bus, except all school district identification has been painted over, and siding has replaced the majority of where windows used to be. On the inside, however, it is an entirely different space. While relatively close-quarters, the interior feels homey and comfortable.

It features a kitchen, complete with a stove and sink, as well as a bedroom area lined with bunk beds for the children and a full-size bed for Nina and her Husband.

Nina has documented her journey, starting from the initial thought that sparked the decision to get a bus and ending with guides for those who are considering converting their own bus into a mobile living space. If you’ve ever wanted to hit the road, but were afraid of being away from home for too long, a converted skoolie may be just what you’re looking for.
