School Bus Safety – Loading and Unloading

Loading Safety

School bus stop-arm policies have been making news across the nation as schools are trying to prevent drivers from harming children loading and unloading every day. It seems like every school district in the nation deals with drivers illegally passing round stopped school buses when the unloading lights are flashing.

Many places are attempting to address the issue with legislation and tech additions like specially placed cameras that catch images of drivers breaking the law. But, it is not like this is a new problem. Sadly, cars have been ignoring the outstretched stop sign and flashing lights of stopped buses for a long, long time.

Just a few years ago the Washington state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Washington State Patrol Commercial Vehicle Division worked together to create a short video addressing the bus stop rules and the reasons behind them. The video, which can be seen below, obviously was meant for Washington alone, but the standards it describes are similar across the country and the main point remains the same: pay attention to stopped buses and follow the law.

To help break down the standards and expectations for stop-arm laws across the country, Mechanics Hub has published a guide that they hope will educate drivers. Inevitably, it will take a combination of awareness-raising measures, innovations like stop-arm cameras, and legislation to cut down on the number of drivers ignoring the rules of the road. But, hopefully, efforts like these will improve the safety of bus passengers of all ages in the future.
