As a person who often has to duck when on a school bus, I’m all the familiar with the risk of head injuries. This isn’t helped by the number of tools and bus accessories which attach to the roof of the vehicle such as fans and bus monitoring equipment like cameras.

Thankfully, REI has unveiled new, low-profile, recessed cameras which will help minimalize obstacles and the risk of passenger injuries. According to REI’s company officials, the new camera only extends 1 inch from the ceiling and creates a safe passenger zone. Compared to normal cameras which tend to stick out several inches, this could be a markedly safer option.

According to School Bus Fleet, who reported the new product, REI’s camera meets new Iowa regulations which state that “Camera heads shall not extend more than 1″ from the ceiling and shall have rounded edges as much as possible.”

Currently, Iowa is the only state with such regulations, but others are expected to follow suit in the near future.

The camera also includes other features such as adjustable viewing angles, high-resolution color images, and intelligent IR technology designed for viewing footage clearly whether it is day or night. The tamper-proof design allow allows for optimum safety and accountability of drivers and passengers.

The camera can be mounted in a variety of locations throughout a bus. Two lens sizes are available: 2.8mm and 3.6mm.
