A frightening school bus wreck this morning has led to the arrest of a Mid-Del school bus driver according to authorities.

The bus driver is accused of driving under the influence of drugs, as well as three counts of leaving the scene of an accident and one count of leaving the scene of an injury accident, Oklahoma City Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow told reporters.

According to witnesses, the school bus struck at least five cars before going up an embankment and colliding with a railroad bridge near SE 15th St. and S. Santa Fe Ave. in Oklahoma City.

Thankfully, there were no students onboard the bus at the time.

Wardlow said one person experienced a serious neck injury and another person may have had a hand amputated in the crash, however no one is in critical or life-threatening condition.

The arrest is one of several incidents across the country this year in which school bus drivers put countless people at risk by driving under the influence. These events show a worrying trend that is preventable with a few precautionary steps, such as regular testing of drivers and possibly implementing technology to ensure bus drivers are sober before they get behind the wheel.
