Do You Have To Be a DIY Expert to Convert a Bus?

The Spruce Moose

When you see a school bus that has been converted into a sleek new traveling home, the assumption is that the people who made it are somewhat experienced with DIY projects and working with their hands and power tools. That is often right, such as the case of Hank Butitta, but not always.

One group of 6 Australians who claimed to have no experience and no tools decided to take the ultimate American road trip, but they needed a vehicle to do it in. Sure, they could have rented an RV or packed into a van, but the group wanted to take the trip in style. So, they bought an old bus and got to work, turning a 1986 Blue Bird into “The Spruce Moose” as they call it.

What really separates this project from the huge number of converted buses out there is this group documented nearly their entire process. From purchasing the bus, buying supplies, and mocking up layouts, to the completed product – the group photographed the entire project and how they did it.

You can see the finished product above and the before picture below, but all the process pictures are available here. Be warned though, there are over 60 photos to look through in their collection. It just goes to show, anyone can turn an old bus into a new and special mobile living space. You just have to make a plan and remain determined. But, if you feel unsure about converting a bus yourself, we are always glad to help.
