Texas School Bus Given Award In Recent Christmas Parade

Humble ISD

One Texas school bus covered in Christmas decorations was given a big award in a local Christmas parade last week.

Thomas McMahon reports Humble Independent School District (ISD) school bus driver Nicole Pennetta came up with the idea to decorate the bus in lights, reindeer antlers, and other decorations and enter it in the parade. Pennetta also organized the efforts to decorate the bus, and Humble ISD driver Karen Ferris took the wheel during the parade while dressed as Mrs. Claus.

Humble ISD assembled more than 50 drivers, attendants, other staff members and kids to ride in and walk with the bus down Humble’s Main Street for the December 2 event. Mark Swackhamer, the district’s assistant director of transportation said many students were also at the parade to cheer on the bus team as they passed.

The effort seems to have been a success as the judges were evidently enamored with the bus, awarding them the top prize in the motor vehicle float category. Swackhamer said that trophies will be presented at the Humble City Council meeting on Jan. 8.

Humble ISD, based about 20 miles north of Houston, transports approximately 11,000 students to and from 43 schools with a fleet of about 267 buses. The district’s buses cover more than 1.7 million miles per year.
