Preventing “Lost” Sleeping Children On The Bus

Losing track of children on school buses is a relatively rare occurrence for most bus drivers and transportation managers, but when it happens it can be terrifying for everyone involved. While it may only take a few minutes and a search of the bus to find the students, that short period can feel like a lifetime.

Having spent several years working as a transportation manager, Mike Guzaldo has spent a fair amount of time thinking of how to prevent these incidents from happening. In his time as transportation manager, Guzaldo has only had one incident of losing a sleeping child on a bus, but that sole incident left an impression that the manager has yet to forget.

Since then, Guzaldo has drafted a 10 part set of recommendations he encourages other districts and transportation managers to implement, which he recently shared with School Bus Fleet Magazine.

As a transportation manager or bus driver, the number one priority is always to make sure children make it to and from school safe and sound. These tips can help guarantee you keep track of all your young passengers and get them to school on time every day.
