School Buses Are One Of The Safest Transportation Options

Bus High Five

It can’t be overstated how safe buses are. They are so safe, that despite being larger and more difficult to drive than traditional vehicles, federal data says that less than one percent of all fatal traffic accidents from 2003 to 2012 were related to school transportation.

To be exact, 0.35 percent of the fatal accidents involved school transportation according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) latest edition of School Transportation-Related Crashes. The report says only 1,222 of the 348,253 fatal motor vehicle crashes that occurred during the 10-year period were related to school transportation directly or indirectly.

The NHTSA defines a school transportation-related crash as one that involves, either directly or indirectly, a school bus body vehicle or a non-school bus functioning as a school bus, transporting children to or from school or school-related activities.

Notably, a large majority of those killed in school transportation-related crashes were occupants of other vehicles involved in the crash. Occupants of school transportation vehicles only accounted for 8 percent of the fatalities, and non-occupants such as pedestrians accounted for 21 percent of the fatalities.

Obviously the ideal would be to have no fatality accidents every year, but buses are built with more of a focus on safety than almost any vehicles on the market. You won’t find safer vehicles easily accessible anywhere else.
