Bus Restaurants?

Mr. P’s Barbecue

School buses are often constrained by their purpose. Despite the massive amount of possibilities hiding in plain sight, most buses are used strictly for their intended purpose and nothing else. They spend their lifespan transporting children or adults and when they become obsolete or too expensive they are put out to pasture and stripped for parts.

That doesn’t have to be the end for a bus though. Increasingly, cunning entrepreneurs have been using buses as the home for their businesses or personal recreation. Rather than being stuck with the padded seats and bright yellow exterior, the creative owners turn their buses into things you would never have imagined.

Buses are a special favorite of upstart restaurant owners who want an alternative to the traditional sit-down eatery in favor of being able to bring the food to you. You’ve probably seen plenty of converted trucks being used for food trucks, but buses are quickly becoming the favorite choice for their extra size and style.

The Burger Bus has literally named their business after their vehicles – easily sighted bright yellow buses with all signs replaced with large signs for tasty burgers and menus. But, it looks like The Burger Bus relies on relatively new buses to house their enterprise. As Mr. P’s Ribs shows, you don’t have to invest in pricey new buses, only to strip them of their most expensively designed parts.

Mr. P’s utilizes a bus that has obviously seen more years than most, but they have made a name for themselves through their unique location and prime barbecue. Out of just a beaten shell of a bus, the owner has gone from one random food cart out of a thousand into an award-winning barbecue location that has been asked to be featured on TV by noted chefs such as Andrew Zimmern (apparently Mr. P’s turned Zimmern down).

All it takes to make a bus more than just a transportation option is creativity and dedication. While restaurants are one out-of-the-box option for the large vehicles, others are converting older buses into full residencies, works of art, and anything else you can imagine.
