A Maryland County Is Promoting School Bus Safety With a Social Media Campaign

Over the past week, Montgomery County, Maryland has been promoting a social media campaign to improve school bus safety. Throughout the week, the county government, police, and schools have worked together to share educational pamphlets and images, as well as numerous videos, most of which has been primarily aimed at preventing stop-arm passing violations.

The campaign, organized around the hashtag #PassItOn, encouraged others to spread the educational media over Twitter with the goal to reach as many motorists as possible – including those who are not in the district.

Stop-arm laws exist across the country, making it illegal to pass a school bus with lights flashing and the stop arm extended. Nonetheless, drivers continue to speed by stopped buses in huge numbers everyday. There has been a strong nation-wide push to prevent these types of violations and to protect students who are loading and unloading buses. Montgomery County’s efforts are only one campaign of many launched within the past year.
