Few topics are as controversial in the school bus industry as the question of whether school buses should be required to have seat belts installed. It can seem like a no-brainer to parents. Seat belts save lives and are required by law in the majority of motor vehicles, so why not in buses?

When you ask bus drivers and transportation directors, the response is nearly unanimous against seat belts. We trust our vehicles to keep children safe, and school buses rank higher than nearly any vehicle ever made in terms of safety. With all the safety features built into modern buses, seat belts seem unnecessary and some drivers even see them as a potential risk in the case of emergency.
