Jeremy and Mira Thompson initially purchased their mini school bus with a dream of hitting the road and living a more adventurous and nomadic lifestyle in a simple skoolie. After a few years though, the couple realized it was time to settle down.

“We wanted more time to see family, travel, and live in the moment, so we got married and hit the road for a couple of years, part of which we spent in a mini school bus,” they told Good Housekeeping. “We fell in love with the freedom, but eventually found ourselves wanting a home base near our families.”

Rather than giving up on their small skoolie, Mira and Jeremy knew they wanted to upgrade it to something more livable in the long term. The result is more cozy cabin than converted school bus.

Jeremy used years of experience with auto body and carpentry work to transform the bus top to bottom. The bus has the limited open space of most skoolies, but the completely revamped interior also packs more luxuries than just about any converted bus out there. The bus includes two queen beds, a living room, and kitchen, with plenty of room for storage as well.

The cedar façade allows Mira and Jeremy plenty of open light for the plants that decorate the interior while also providing privacy from the outside world.

While the family may have settled down a little, they still rely on the freedom that can only be found with a skoolie. “It’s the beauty of tiny living,” says Mira. “It gives you the extra nudge to get off the couch and outside into nature or your community.”
